Separating Complexity Classes Using Autoreducibility

چکیده
A set is autoreducible if it can be reduced to itself by a Turing machine that does not ask its own input to the oracle. We use autoreducibility to separate the polynomial-time hierarchy from polynomial space by showing that all Turing-complete sets for certain levels of the exponential-time hierarchy are autoreducible but there exists some Turing-complete set for doubly exponential space that is not. Although we already knew how to separate these classes using diagonalization, our proofs separate classes solely by showing they have diierent structural properties, thus applying Post's Program to complexity theory. We feel such techniques may prove unknown separations in the future. In particular, if we could settle the question as to whether all Turing-complete sets for doubly exponential time are autoreducible, we would separate either polynomial time from polynomial space, and nondeterministic logarithmic space from nondeterministic polynomial time, or else the polynomial-time hierarchy from exponential time. We also look at the autoreducibility of complete sets under nonadaptive, bounded query, probabilistic and nonuniform reductions. We show how settling some of these autoreducibility questions will also lead to new complexity class separations.

Autoreducibility of Complete Sets for Log-Space and Polynomial-Time Reductions
We investigate the autoreducibility and mitoticity of complete sets for several classes with respect to different polynomial-time and logarithmic-space reducibility notions. Previous work in this area focused on polynomial-time reducibility notions. Here we obtain new mitoticity and autoreducibility results for the classes EXP and NEXP with respect to some restricted truth-table reductions (e.g...
متن کاملAutoreducibility and Mitoticity of Logspace-Complete Sets for NP and Other Classes
We study the autoreducibility and mitoticity of complete sets for NP and other complexity classes, where the main focus is on logspace reducibilities. In particular, we obtain: • For NP and all other classes of the PH: each ≤ m -complete set is ≤ log T -autoreducible. • For P, ∆pk, NEXP: each ≤ m -complete set is a disjoint union of two ≤ log 2-tt-complete sets. • For PSPACE: each ≤pdtt-complet...
متن کاملRedundancy in Complete Sets
We show that a set is m-autoreducible if and only if it is m-mitotic. This solves a long standing open question in a surprising way. As a consequence of this unconditional result and recent work by Glaßer et al. [11], complete sets for all of the following complexity classes are m-mitotic: NP, coNP, ⊕P, PSPACE, and NEXP, as well as all levels of PH, MODPH, and the Boolean hierarchy over NP. In ...
متن کاملAutoreducibility and Completeness for Partial Multivalued Functions
In this paper, we investigate a relationship between manyone-like autoreducibility and completeness for classes of functions computed by polynomial-time nondeterministic Turing transducers. We prove two results. One is that any many-one complete function for these classes is metric many-one autoreducible. The other is that any strict metric manyone complete function for these classes is strict ...
متن کاملSeparating the Notions of Self- and Autoreducibility
Recently Glaÿer et al. have shown that for many classes C including PSPACE and NP it holds that all of its nontrivial many-one complete languages are autoreducible. This immediately raises the question of whether all many-one complete languages are Turing self-reducible for such classes C. This paper considers a simpler version of this question whether all PSPACE-complete (NPcomplete) languages...
